John Lundstram lucky to avoid another Rangers red card as Celtic hero fumes
John Lundstram was lucky to avoid ANOTHER Rangers red card with a “shocking” late challenge on Celtic’s Matt O’Riley.
That was the view of Hoops TV commentator Peter Grant who was livid at the midfielder for his rash efforts to scythe down his opponent. As the clock ticked down in Celts’ 1-0 win over their fierce rivals in yesterday afternoon’s Scottish Cup Final, playmaker O’Riley looked to keep possession and run down the minutes.
That’s when Lundstram came thundering in with a sliding challenge with the timer about to hit the 100-minute mark. O’Riley managed to leap out the way of the tackle and hold onto the ball for his side, but Grant was still adamant it was a poor one and would have resulted in a sending off had he made contact.
“I tell you what, if he (O’Riley) hadn’t jumped over it that was another red card for Lundstram,” he said on Celtic TV comms duty. “It was a shocking attempt and how the referee has let him away with it, whether it was the last kick of the game or not, is shocking.”
Referee Nick Walsh wasn’t asked to check the monitor on the challenge as the final whistle blew just seconds later but it would have been a second red in as many derbies for the ex-Sheffield United man.
The 30-year-old was sent off at Parkhead earlier this month for a late one on Alistair Johnston.
