John Robertson donates piece of Scotland history to raise money for football ace

Caley Thistle, currently in financial dire straits, cancelled TWO surgeries before Doran’s contract expired last month.

So ex-team-mate Shane Sutherland has launched a crowdfunder to pay for the op he needs.

And now Robertson has stepped in to help pay for the 33-year-old’s lengthy rehab.

The Hearts legend was picked to play at Euro 1992 but missed out through injury, similar to Lyndon Dykes ahead of this year’s finals.

Scotland shirts, however, bearing his name and number were printed by the SFA ahead of the tournament.

But Robbo was unaware of its existence until he was given one by a collector earlier this year.

He said: “I was selected for the Scotland squad which qualified for Euro 1992 in Sweden.

“But similar to Lyndon Dykes, I was injured in the very last training session and wasn’t able to go.

“But they had already made up the strips with the names and numbers, and I was issued with the number 14.

“I didn’t go so it’s a tournament issued strip that was never worn.

The performance we wanted, amazing Scotland fans and budgie smugglers

“And it’s also the ONLY official strip that has my name on the back of it, I’m showing my age here!

“But squad numbers and names didn’t come in to the Premier League until the 1998/99 season, and I left Hearts in 1998.

“So there is no strip with my name on the back of it, apart from this one.

“It’s tragic what has happened to Aaron. It’s fantastic money has been raised for his operation.

“And now we are trying to help that little bit more to help ease the strain on him and his family in terms of rehabilitation costs in general.

“I’m sure you’ll all agree it’s a worthy cause.”
