Love is the winner as couple set to marry during Scotland’s Euros opener

A COUPLE set to marry on Euros opener day have told of their joy at having their big match at the same time as Scotland’s.

Emily Mitchell, 27, admitted she “nearly cried” when she found out, while her future hubby, Stuart Ferris, 28, was “laughing”.

But now they’re buzzing at the date clash as it’ll make their day with 170 guests at Maryculter House Hotel in Aberdeen more memorable.

The lovebirds, from Mintlaw in Aberdeenshire, knew June 14 was a potential game date but were told it was a “slim chance” Scotland would be leading the Euros 2024 charge.

Administrator Emily told the Scottish Sun: “I was away on my work night out when I found out and if I didn’t have my make-up on I would have cried. Initially I feared nobody would come to our wedding.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was typical that it was on our big day. Stuart was laughing. I think it was a bit of disbelief and joy.

“But I’m so chilled about it now – it makes it extra special and different.”

Emily was delighted when the venue’s rules prevented them from having screens to watch the match as it gave her a “genuine reason” for not having a screen for guests asking about it.

This despite her future hubby and his friends being among those to ask.

Emily and Celtic fan Stuart will kick off the reception at 8pm with their first dance to Bradley Marshall’s ‘Perfect for Me’, at the same time as Scotland’s Euro campaign begins.

Emily added: “I’m lucky I have a genuine reason I can’t put a screen up. Stuart also asked me if we could have a screen and I said no. He would have had a screen if it was possible.

“But he wasn’t bothered and said our wedding was more important to him. I know he will get updates, as I will also want updates on the score and stuff and hopefully, they do well.

“It is the first time I take priority over football. It’s probably the only time I take priority over football but at the weekend football takes priority.”

Whatever the result, Stuart and Emily will have time to enjoy the rest of the campaign from the poolside on their honeymoon in Rhodes, Greece.

It comes after research by Snicker found that 77% of Scottish couples enjoying a summer wedding are concerned about their wedding clashing with a Scotland match.

It also found that 66% of guests were also concerned about the clash.
