Luxury camping resort with spectacular sea views voted best in Scotland

A FIVE-star campsite near Edinburgh has been named the best in Scotland.

Drummohr Camping and Glamping Site in East Lothian came out top at the awards from Pitchup.com, the UK’s leading outdoor accommodation booking platform.

The latest accolade for the site in Levenhall, near Musselburgh, comes just months after it was named the best campsite in the UK in a vote organised by Camping magazine.

Drummohr’s top-rated site is steps from the beaches of the Firth of Forth and just eight miles from Edinburgh and it is consistently praised its location and ‘super friendly staff’.

Pitchup.com trawled through a massive 171,000 verified guest reviews from last year, to discover Scotland’s best sites.

Each was evaluated on aspects including location, value for money, quality of accommodation, activities and cleanliness, with guests awarding 70 per cent of all UK sites listed on the Pitchup.com platform in 2023 an overall score of 8/10 and above.

Scoring a full 10/10 from last year’s visitors, reviewers agree that the best thing about Drummohr Camping and Glamping Site is its location and stunning views of the Firth of Forth.

Set in the grounds of a former monastery, it allows for both urban adventures in nearby Edinburgh and rural escapades along the East Lothian coast, with the John Muir Way just five minutes from the entrance.

The local beaches, North Berwick, and the adjacent Royal Musselburgh Golf Club offer fabulous day-out options.

The site features renovated shower and fully equipped laundry room, playground and firepit rentals.

Drummohr, which was awarded a five-star rating by VisitScotland last year, includes self-catering luxury lodges with hot tubs, glamping pods and en-suite bothies, as well as both grass and hard-standing pitches for touring and tents, all with electric.

And youngsters can let their imaginations run wild at the family-friendly site with a stay in one of the wizard, fairy or adventure-themed pods.

It’s also dog-friendly and has its own scenic dog walk and dog-friendly accommodation, with up to two dogs welcomed on its tent and touring pitches free of charge.

Many more of Scotland’s sites were rated tops by holidaymakers in 2023 for camping, touring or glamping including Isle Of Iona Campsite, Argyll, which scored an impressive 9.9/10

The Isle of Iona Campsite is on a working croft with spectacular views

Tranquil Iona in the Inner Hebrides is known as a ‘sanctuary of peace’ rich with history. Reviewers enjoyed the authentic back-to-basics experience on a working croft, with toilets, showers, firepit and barbecue area.

Barrow Campsite on the banks of the River Nairn, near Nairn was rated 9.8/10 by guests who’d stayed there last year.

Set in a secluded landscape with hillside views, the park is just a 10-minute drive from Nairn’s town and beach, and historical hotspots are rife in the area – hike to Cawdor Castle and Gardens in an hour and a half, then travel to Culloden Battlefield visitor centre or the 18th-century Fort George.

The site has dedicated barbecue area, a dog-friendly park complete with pond and a fishing river with permits available at a local shop in Nairn.

Finally the dog-friendly Wee Caravan Park in New Cumnock, Ayrshire was given a score of 9.8/10 and heralded for off the beaten track location.

Guests also loved the neighbouring friendly herd of alpacas (treks are available), the camp’s peace and quiet, flat pitches and stunning views.

Pitchup’s founder Dan Yates says: “From the rugged Highlands to the tranquil Isle of Iona through to the historic Lothian region, our reviewers love the fact that campsites across Scotland are incredibly diverse.

“By showcasing genuine feedback from previous guests alongside average customer ratings across all listings, we aim to make it really easy for newcomers and seasoned campers to get a flavour of what to expect from their stay.
