McMath wins shooting gold for Scotland – BBC Sport

Scotland’s David McMath won Commonwealth gold in the men’s double trap, after compatriot Linda Pearson claimed bronze in the women’s event.

Tim Kneale won silver behind McMath for the Isle of Man’s first medal of 2018.

India’s Shreyasi Singh beat Australia’s Emma Cox in a shoot-off to win the women’s double trap gold.

Pearson, 54, then announced her retirement after helping Scotland pass their previous best medal haul for an overseas Games – 29 at Melbourne 2006.

Pearson hit one more target than India’s Varsha Varman while England’s Rachel Parish was unable to repeat the bronze she won at Glasgow 2014, finishing sixth after hitting four targets fewer than Pearson overall.

On her future, Pearson said: “Probably at my age, I’m going to retire from Olympic disciplines. There is no shooting at Birmingham [2022], so this will be it for me.”

In the men’s event, there was disappointment for two decorated English shooters, as they both failed to qualify for the final.

Steven Scott, the 2014 champion, finished down in 13th, while compatriot Matthew French – who finished second behind Scott four years ago – was eighth in qualifying, two points off a spot in the final.

Scotland’s Calum Fraser also missed out, along with Manxman Jake Keeling, but McMath, 21, comfortably qualified in first place and then hit four more targets than Kneale in the final to claim gold.
