Q&A with Shereen Cutkelvin
Congratulations on your new role! How does it feel to be the new presenter for BBC Scotland’s coverage of TRNSMT?
I’m absolutely over the moon about presenting TRNSMT! It’s only starting to sink in this week, so I’m full of emotions. I can’t wait to feel the energy backstage and enjoy the things I love most about live music, right here in Glasgow.
What excites you the most about hosting TRNSMT 2024?
Getting to bring the best parts of Scotland’s biggest music festival to those who can’t make it to Glasgow Green in person and reliving those moments with them. Also, catching a cheeky chat with some artists backstage is always fun!
You have had a number of presenting gigs already, including co-hosting BBC Introducing for BBC Radio Scotland. What do you enjoy most about being a presenter?
I love getting to be myself with no qualms. I don’t proclaim to be the best presenter… I aim to be real as possible, and it’s something I never want to lose. Connecting with people when you’re truly yourself is a really invigorating feeling!
Do you ever get nervous before a live broadcast? If you do, what helps you calm your nerves?
Hell yeah! That’s just life. I usually like to take a moment of calm and gratitude to count my blessings and reassure myself it’s all going to be great! Enjoying the moment is an important lesson.
It’s a great line-up this year! Are there any artists or performances you are especially excited to see at TRNSMT?
I’m loving Jalen Ngonda at the moment, and of course, I can’t wait to see the man himself, Calvin Harris! Bring on the tunes!
The winner of BBC Introducing’s Scottish Act of The Year 2024, Bottle Rockets, will be performing at this year’s TRNSMT. How important is it for emerging artists to have opportunities to perform at festivals?
Bottle Rockets are incredible, and it’s so great to see them on the line-up. They will smash it. Having these opportunities is essential in creating future stars, not only in the Scottish scene but worldwide. Being able to sing in front of a home crowd and potentially gain a lot of new fans is fantastic. It’s all about growing, sharing your music with the world, and connecting with others.
Do you have any highlights or funny festival memories?
This will be my first time at TRNSMT, so it’s going to be a core memory for life! One of my highlights was T in the Park, my first Scottish festival, where I performed with my band Neon Jungle. We had the crowd chanting, and it was a blast. I then nipped out into the crowd and won a teddy bear bigger than me. I dragged it around the festival, and it stayed in London with me for the next few years. He was a great flatmate!
What are your top 3 music festival essentials?
Boots (the weather can change at any time), a battery charger pack, and lip gloss!
