NC500 drivers left baffled by ‘confusing’ sign on Scotland’s very own Route 66
DRIVERS on the North Coast 500 route have been left baffled after encountering a “confusing” road sign on Scotland’s very own Route 66.
A sign that read “welcome to Isle of Skye” has appeared over 140 miles away from the popular west coast Scottish island.
It was erected for Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan new film which was being shot last week at Kylesku in Sutherland on the northeast coast.
Kylesku Bridge has been featured in films, adverts and TV programmes such as Top Gear and is a highlight of the North Coast 500 road trip.
But movie bosses doubled the Kylescu Bridge for the Skye Bridge – but locals said tourists were left feeling they might have got severely lost.
Local Highland Councillor Hugh Morrison said: “They must have thought they had taken the wrong turn and were not driving on the Scottish mainland but the Isle of Skye.
“It was more like 50 shades of wrong way! It was all because Jamie Dornan was filming. But I just wish we had the same council budget allocation as Skye gets!”
The Undertow began filming in nearby Kinlochbervie last month and shooting will take place on the Isle of Mull – locations “chosen for their breath-taking beauty,” say producers.
The crime noir series sees Dornan take on the dual roles of identical twins Adam and Lee.
And Dornan was spotted at Kylesku on Thursday dressed as a fisherman – but with a designer pair of sunglasses to ease the glare of an even bigger star.
But not in keeping with the weather, the Northern Irish actor was on set wearing a woolly jumper and work trousers.
Also taking part in the shoot was Scottish actor Gary Lewis, best known for his roles in films such as Billy Elliot, Joyeux Noël, Gangs of New York and Eragon as well as major roles in the television docudrama Supervolcano and the Starz series Outlander.
Glaswegian actor Iain De Caestecker has been cast in a lead role as Marty, a police constable and best friend of Lee.
The Undertow is to be released next year and is based on The Nordisk Film Production AS television series, Twin.
We recently told how owners of a campsite on the popular North Coast 500 route have accused campervan drivers of stealing from their premises.
Locals claimed there were two separate incidents within the space of 24 hours where motorists in tourers used the camp’s facilities without paying.
Elsewhere, a tourist travelling along the popular route has branded locals “rude and miserable” after they faced backlash for asking for advice.
The tourist had read that they would be able to go wild camping in their van in Dornoch Beach, in the Scottish Highlands.
However, when they arrived they couldn’t find anywhere they could park up for the night.

Hoping for answers, they took to the Facebook group NC500 and asked locals for advice.
But the tourist was hit with furious backlash as residents took to the comments to slam the campervan driver and said they “should have done their homework”.
