Promising Former Oiler Signs With New Team
EDMONTON — It’s the most wonderful time of pre season.
Fans get a glimpse of their favorite players on the ice. For Edmonton Oilers fans, it’s a chance to see Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner fly around on the ice. It’s also the time when PTO’s are announced.
Travis Dermott appears to be signing a PTO with the Oilers. Additionally, a former Oilers forward has agreed to a PTO with a Western Conference team.

The Utah Hockey Club (as they are currently known by) have signed Kailer Yamamoto to a PTO. According to a tweet sent out by the team, he will report to training camp on September 18th.
While this doesn’t guarantee that he will be given a contract, it certainly increases his chances. While he has agreed to this PTO with Utah, he will still be free to sign a contract with any of the 32 teams in the NHL.
Yamamoto had a rocky 2023-24 season. The Seattle Kraken took a chance on him with a one-year $1.5-million deal. Once that deal expired the team decided to go in a different direction.
He scored 16 points in 59 games with the Kraken. That’s nine less points than the previous year with the Oilers. Also, he saw his time on ice diminish to 11:59 from 16:35 the year prior.
The 25-year-old winger has only played 303 NHL regular season games. Being an undersized player hasn’t done him any favors. However, his speed and competitive nature make him an asset to any lineup.
As far as potential is concerned, he’s barely scratched the surface. A team like Utah could present him with the perfect opportunity to solidify placement on an NHL roster.
