Rangers transfer state of play as Norwich City’s Kenny McLean faces waiting game

Rangers have added six new faces to their squad this summer but will Kenny McLean become signing number seven?

That’s the question a lot of Ibrox supporters are asking as speculation refuses to go away surrounding a move for the Scotland midfielder. McLean, 32, has been linked with his boyhood heroes throughout his career but fresh reports last month suggested that the midfielder was a serious target for Philippe Clement.

Rumours last week suggested that McLean wouldn’t be joining the Light Blues due to his salary demands but his agent was quick to laugh off those reports. A lifelong fan of the club, it’s likely McLean would jump at the chance to pull on the royal blue jersey especially as he enters the twilight years of his career.

A virtual ever-present for Norwich City last summer, the Canaries are in no rush to get rid of one of their key players as they target Premier League promotion under new boss Johannes Hoff Thorup. And Football Scotland understands that Gers have yet to lodge an official bid for the ex-Aberdeen and St Mirren midfielder – who has spent the last six years at Carrow Road.

Of course, that could change over the coming days and weeks as boss Clement continues to rebuild his squad. The no-nonsense Belgian has already got rid of Jon McLaughlin, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram and Kemar Roofe and several others could follow.

It’s believed Robby McCrorie is seeking a fresh challenge after growing frustrated at his lack of opportunities, with Jack Butland the undisputed first-choice keeper. Captain James Tavernier continues to be linked with Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq, while Connor Goldson has attracted the interest of League One side Birmingham City – although not for the figures that ex-Aberdeen chief Keith Wyness bizarrely floated!

Ianis Hagi’s future seems to lie away from Ibrox with his agent admitting he’d be willing to spend his own money to find his client a new club. Kieran Dowell, Todd Cantwell and Tom Lawrence could all move on if offers are tabled, while the much-maligned Cyriel Dessers has options in Spain, France and Greece.

Gers would like to recoup their £2.5million Sam Lammers after the Dutchman resurrected his career on loan with FC Utrecht last season. Scott Wright has been touted for a move to Sheffield Wednesday, although Owls boss Danny Rohl was coy when asked directly about the attacker at the weekend. Wright joined the rest of his teammates on the plane to the Netherlands yesterday as Gers step up their pre-season plans.
