Iceland defeat could be a ‘good thing’ – Gallagherpublished at 15:37
Serbia v England (Sun, 20:00 BST)
England
OK, here’s a final post from Conor Gallagher’s England news conference.
The Chelsea midfielder was asked for more details on the impact Mauricio Pochettino had on him at Stamford Bridge: “He just showed his belief and trust in me, which is all a player wants. If the manager shows you a bit of love it makes you play better, gives you confidence.”
On whether Gareth Southgate is similar in that sense: “Absolutely. He has been brilliant with everyone, that’s one of the reasons he’s a great manger, how he makes every player feel. He fills them with confidence and he has certainly done that with me.”
On the importance of starting well against Serbia following the Iceland defeat: “Very important. In tournament football it is important to do the first thing as well as you can – the right pass, winning the first tackle, first header, second-ball – just to give the whole team confidence to go and win that first game.
“With the Iceland game, although it wasn’t a good result and it wasn’t the best performance, I think in a way it could be good that it happened, I think it was a bit of a wake-up call for us that it’s not easy to win games against any country. Like I said, we are going to be more than ready to beat Serbia.”
