Reliving WWE’s Scottish History Ahead Of Historic Clash At The Castle Event In Glasgow – Inside The Ropes
As we draw closer to WWE Clash At The Castle this Saturday the 15th of June at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro – which will be WWE’s first-ever PLE / PPV event to be ever held in Scotland – let’s look back at WWE’s long history with the country dating back to 1991.
WWE’s first show ever in Scotland was 33 years ago in Glasgow on the 25th of April, 1991, as part of the “UK Rampage” tour and was headlined by two future Hall of Famers when Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated Ted DiBiase with the two involved in a bitter feud at the time. While not actually Scottish, Roddy Piper of course embraced Glasgow as his hometown and throughout his long historic career represented Scotland by wearing a kilt and having traditional bagpipe music play during his entrance.
The first show in Glasgow also featured one of Andre The Giant’s final WWE matches as he teamed with The Rockers to defeat the Orient Express and Mr. Fuji.
Over the next several years, shows in Scotland would be held as part of WWE’s regular European tours, featuring the top stars of the era and all future Hall of Famers such as Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, the Legion of Doom, Davey Boy Smith and The Undertaker. Even Hulk Hogan wrestled one of his original final WWE matches at the first show in Edinburgh in August 1993.
WWE was notably absent from Scotland in the years of 1995 through 2001 during the end of the New Generation Era and most of the Attitude era, before returning to Glasgow on the 2nd of May, 2002 in front of a sell-out crowd featuring all the top superstars from Raw including Steve Austin, Triple H, Ric Flair and Eddie Guerrero.
WWE has regularly toured Scotland ever since, including finally holding the first televised events from the country in 2016.
First WWE Televised Event From Scotland In Eight Years
As well as Clash At The Castle from Glasgow, WWE Friday Night SmackDown will also be held at the OVO Hydro on the 14th of June – the first televised WWE event since Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown were held at the same arena in November 2016 in the build-up to that year’s Survivor Series event.
The following night of course is WWE’s second-ever Clash At The Castle PLE. The first was a resounding success held in Cardiff, Wales in September 2022, where Scotland’s own Drew McIntyre unsuccessfully challenged WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns in the main event.
Now almost two years later, McIntyre is again in one of the main events, this time returning to his home country to challenge World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest in a bid to gain revenge for Priest’s Money In the Bank cash-in on McIntyre two months ago at WrestleMania XL. Will McIntyre be triumphant this time around, now in practically his own back yard?
Other feature matches include Cody Rhodes defending the WWE Championship against AJ Styles in an “I Quit” match at the show, Scotland’s own Piper Niven will challenge Bayley for the WWE Women’s Championship and Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn will defend his title against Chad Gable.
Tune in to WWE Clash At The Castle this Saturday the 15th of June to see history be made from Glasgow, Scotland – streaming on Peacock in the U.S with a 2 pm ET start time, and everywhere else on the WWE Network with a 7pm local start time in the UK.
