Scotland cruise to comfortable win over USA in Washington to make it two wins from two on summer tour – Eurosport
Scotland recorded a comfortable 42-7 victory against the USA in Washington DC, making it two wins from two on their summer tour.
Duhan van der Merwe’s first-half try saw him take his international record to 27, equalling Stuart Hogg’s Scottish record.
The hulking winger moved inside and punched a striking line through the USA defence to finish under the posts.
With two tests left on their tour, you would put money on the Edinburgh star staking his claim as Scotland’s greatest try-scorer.
But it was hooker Ewan Ashman who took the try-scoring plaudits in Washington, picking up a first-half hat-trick as the base of a powerful Scotland maul. The Scottish pack had taken charge of the match and there was little the Americans could do.
Four first-half tries had all but sealed the win for Scotland in a match that was only ever going to go one way.
The USA’s current iteration is a far cry from the side that shocked Scotland in Houston six years ago and lost 22-20 to Romania in Chicago last week as they still search for a first win in 2024.
The humid and greasy conditions were key for the host’s only try of the day. Matt Fagerson let the ball slip from his hands for AJ MacGinty to pounce on, and Tomasso Boni ran over the line from short-range moments later.
It was a brief respite for the Eagles, who were then subject to another half of Scottish dominance and the host’s own ill-discipline became their undoing, with tighthead David Ainu’u sent to the sin-bin midway through the first half.
The muggy weather seemed to sap both sides until Scotland regained their supremacy through a try from George Horne, marking the visitors’ fifth of the day.
The Eagles then gifted Scotland a sixth and final try as the Scots pushed a scrum to the hosts’ line with ease and Fagerson could simply dot down the ball to finish the rout.
The Scots now travel to South America to play two further tests against Chile and Uruguay.
