Scotland fan meets Hollywood star en route to Euro 2024 in battered camper van

Scotland’s most loyal fan has driven to Germany in a battered 58-year-old camper van – and he doesn’t even have a ticket for Friday night’s match.
Father of two John Falkirk, 44, has driven his battered VW van – built in 1966 – and parked up outside the team’s HQ. On the way he’s already met Trainspotting, Star Wars, Blackhawk Down and Moulin Rouge star Ewan McGregor, and Charley Boorman.
He videoed McGregor saying: “All right Scotland – Good luck in the Euros”. John said: “Incredibly I met Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman when I got off the ferry in Amsterdam.
“They were on their motorbikes – both really nice blokes. The van is fantastic but I had to take it very slowly coming down.
“I drove to Newcastle and then got the ferry to Amsterdam. The van is nicknamed “Elvis” as, from the front, it looks like it’s got a quiff.”
John, who is from Falkirk, added: “I’ve got a very understanding ex-wife! She looked after the kids and allowed me to come and I’m really looking forward to it.
“Now I just want to get a ticket. I’ve managed to get two for the other games but so far it’s impossible to get one for Germany.”
Meanwhile, 50 years ago Scotland fan Andy Cramb was photographed as part of the Tartan Army at a World Cup match in Germany.
Now half a century on he’s back in Germany but he’s finally ditched his tartan flares. On the 14th June 1974 Andy was in Dortmund as part of a crowd of 25,800 watching the 2-0 win against Zaire with goals scored by Joe Jordan and Peter Lorimer.
On Friday June 14, he will be in Munich desperately trying to get a ticket for the game against Germany. Andy was just 21 when he took his dad’s car – without his permission – to drive to Germany for the 1974 World Cup.
Andy, now 71, a retired army lance bombardier, taxi driver and mechanic, said: “There can’t be many people who have been in Germany at a football tournament, on the same day 50 years apart.
“I still remember 1974 vividly – it was certainly a lot easier to get tickets back then!” Andy, from Easterhouse, Glasgow is in Germany with wife Marion, 71, and sister Liz Day, 62.
He said: “I’d just love to get a ticket for the match but it’s going to be very difficult.” Andy has watched Scotland hundreds of times and once saw them play Brazil – with Pele in the side – at Hampden Park.
