Scotland issued yellow thunderstorm warning as rain and hail predicted

Scots are being urged to brace for thunder today as grim weather is set to continue.

A new yellow thunderstorm alert has been issued by the Met Office for Saturday (June 15) which covers the bottom half of the country and parts of northern England. Set to begin at 11am, affected areas can expect to see up to 40mm of rain fall in two to three hours.

In addition, forecasters are predicting slow moving thunderstorms in certain areas which could consist of hail, lightning and heavy rain – some of the heaviest could produce 20mm of rain in under an hour. The latest alert is to last until 11pm tonight and covers Strathclyde, the southwest and Borders as well as Tayside & Fife.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: There will be some brighter spells out there, but there will be a lot of showers to watch out for.

“Spells of showers or longer outbreaks of rain at times all circulating around an area of low pressure centered across northern parts of the country. The showers where they do occur could be lively with thunderstorms

Drivers should remain cautious and plan ahead, as road conditions are likely to be impacted by spray, resulting in longer journey times. Flooding to buildings is also a possibility as well as power outages and there’s even a chance that lightning strikes could cause structural damage.

While the warning is to end tonight, Mr McGivern reports wet conditions lasting overnight. “In the north of Scotland, some more prolonged outbreaks of rain turn up and they tend to sink their way southwards as the night goes on.”

The band of low pressure is expected to hang around on Sunday and its movement will make conditions “perhaps less unsettled” but still plenty of rain to be seen in the south first thing in the morning. Clouds are expected to clear as the day continues, with some showers persisting across northern Scotland.
