Scotland set for heatwave as experts predict the hottest summer on record

Scotland is set for the hottest summer on record, with 28C (82F) continental meltdowns on the way as the Met Office backed heat rushes. After 25C weekend sunshine in Glasgow, the summer verdict will cheer music festivals, tourism and pubs.

The Met Office said a much-hotter-than-normal three months to the start of August is seven times more likely than a much-cooler-than-average period. This summer will be the hottest on record if UK temperatures are 1.2C above the average 14.6C from June to August, Met Office figures show.

Its long-range outlook, being briefed behind-the-scenes to the Cabinet Office, transport chiefs and businesses, said: “There is an increased chance of hot conditions. But this does not imply continuous heatwave conditions, and there could be less extreme levels of warmth than heatwaves.”

Heat ahead is the news millions of sunlovers have been longing to hear following winter’s months of rain. Scotland is expected to see 28C, with hotter in England. Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said: “We could see the mid-30s in one or two spells. Most signals are pointing to a warmer-than-average summer.”

Sizzles will blow in from the continent, with next month set to see beach dashes. A Met Office forecaster said: “Through the first half of June has a slightly higher likelihood of above-average temperatures and hot spells.”

The Met Office outlook said there is a 35 per cent probability of much-warmer-than-average temperatures over the next three months, compared to just a five per cent chance of much cooler conditions.
