Scotland wants the big names back for Commonwealth Games
Scottish organisers will bring back sport’s biggest names to the
Commonwealth Games for Glasgow 2014 as they seek to avoid the mistakes
made in Delhi.
They have learned from the chaos in India and pledged to save the
‘friendly Games’ from extinction.
‘We will move heaven and earth to ensure that the likes of Usain Bolt
and Jessica Ennis are competing in Glasgow,’ said the president of
Commonwealth Games Scotland Michael Cavanagh.
Scotland will be helped by the fact their Games take place in late July rather than October.
The timing of the Delhi event at the end of long season meant stars including Bolt, Ennis, Asafa Powell, Chris Hoy and Phillips Idowu stayed away.
India’s government has ordered a probe into the construction delays and corruption allegations that blighted the lead-up to the Delhi Games.
