Scotland’s best fish and chip shops for 2024 crowned – check your area
The best fish and chips takeaways and restaurants in the UK have been crowned at a prestigious award ceremony, and a number of Scottish chippies were recognised.
On Wednesday, the annual National Fish and Chip Awards were held in London, with eateries from across the nation vying to take home a prize. The awards, which are administered by the National Federation of Fish Friers, celebrate the best of the best in the UK fish and chip industry.
Among the many categories at this year’s National Fish and Chip Awards, two of the most notable were Takeaway of the Year and Restaurant of the Year. In the former, Scottish chippy The Fish Works in the coastal North Ayrshire town of Largs took home third place.
The Fish Works, which got pipped to the number one spot by Ship Deck in Wales and Yarm Road Fish and Chips in County Durham, is a family-run fish and chip shop situated right on Largs‘ scenic promenade. With views out across the Scotland’s west coast towards Cumbrae, Arran, and Bute, the chippy is as loved for its idyllic setting as its fresh seafood.
Elsewhere, Redcloak Fish Bar in the Aberdeenshire harbour town of Stonehaven took home the Newcomer of the Year award, for which only chippies that opened on or after January 1, 2022 were eligible. The takeaway prides itself on using the best quality ingredients and sourcing its stock from local retailers and sellers.
Meanwhile, Redcloak Fish Bar also took home a second prize on Wednesday, with staff member Jamie Russo being awarded Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year. The category, which was only open to those under the age of 25, celebrates young professionals working in the fish and chip industry.
The final Scottish chippy to take home a prize at the National Fish and Chip Awards was The Real Food Café in the Stirling village of Tyndrum, winning the Staff Training and Development Award . This category recognises businesses that exceed expectations with great staff training opportunities and apprenticeships.
The Real Food Café was also among the food destinations featured by the Daily Record in our guide to the top 50 restaurants for 2024 earlier this year. At the time, we praised it for being “one of the tastiest and most inventive food spots in the whole of Scotland”.
