Scottie Scheffler joins Tiger Woods, wins third straight PGA Tour Player of the Year award

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given how dominant his season was, but Scottie Scheffler made even more PGA Tour history on Tuesday.

Scheffler officially won his third straight Player of the Year award, the Tour announced on Tuesday night. He is now the first golfer since Tiger Woods did so nearly two decades ago to win the award in three consecutive seasons.

Only Scheffler and Woods have won the award in three consecutive seasons. Woods has won the awards 11 times in his career, most recently in 2013, and he won it five straight times from 1999-2003. Rory McIlroy has also won it three times, most recently in 2019, though his wins had at least one season between them each time.

The Tour’s Player of the Year award is decided by a member vote. Scheffler received 91% of the vote from other golfers. McIlroy and Xander Schauffele were also nominated.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour, congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on a truly historic season, capped off with his first FedExCup title and today a third consecutive Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA Tour Player of the Year,” commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “Scottie took on challenges from the best players in the world on the biggest stages all season, and being honored as PGA Tour Player of the Year is the ultimate sign of respect from his peers.”

Scheffler won a remarkable seven times on Tour last season, which brought his career wins total to 13. He finished outside of the top 10 just once in 13 starts before the U.S. Open in June, and he picked up four wins in five starts in March and April — which included a second straight win at The Players Championship and a win at the Masters. Scheffler did not miss a single cut in his 19 starts on Tour, and he in September. Scheffler also won the unofficial Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas last week.

Scheffler is now the first player to win seven or more times in a single season since Woods did so in 2007. He has held his No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings for 82 straight weeks. Scheffler also won gold at the Olympics in Paris, and he helped lead the United States to a win at the Presidents Cup in Canada earlier this fall.

Amid his wins, ahead of the second round. Scheffler was trying to drive into the golf course before the second round of the tournament, though the scene in front of the course in Kentucky was chaotic after a vendor was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. that morning. An officer pulled Scheffler out of the car and arrested him, but Scheffler was booked and released in time to make his tee time as scheduled. He then posted a 5-under, which was the second-best score of the day. The charges were eventually dismissed.

The 2025 PGA Tour season will start officially in January at The Sentry in Hawaii, which is the first of eight signature events. Scheffler has played in that tournament in each of the past two seasons — he finished T5 last season — but it’s still unclear if Scheffler will be in the field next month.
