Ceci has spent the last three seasons with the Oilers and McDavid. After the offseason trade, Ceci moves from playing with the 2015 first-overall pick to the 2024 first-overall pick in Macklin Celebrini. When jokingly asked if Celebrini is the next McDavid, Ceci still compared the two.
“He’s pretty special so far,” Ceci said about Celebrini. “He’s in another group, so I haven’t seen a ton of him, but he’s definitely got the skill.”
The 18-year-old has made it look easy during training camp, proving why he was the No. 1 pick.
The Sharks traded for Ceci to improve the team’s veteran presence throughout the lineup. Ceci’s 786 regular-season game experience and a trip to the Stanley Cup Final can impart a lot of knowledge to a young roster.
The defenseman did say the Sharks prospects keep the veterans feeling young.
“I think there’s a good mix of veteran guys and young, exciting skills. They help us out. They keep us young,” Ceci said. “We help them out and just try to think their way through the game, help them out with things off the ice. Just from being around for a while, you learn things on the ice and away from the rink. We’re just going to try and help them feel comfortable and get what they need to help us succeed.”
Celebrini isn’t as high of a prospect that Connor McDavid was coming out of the draft, but Cody Ceci seems to have high hopes for him and Will Smith.
“I’ve seen a lot of Smith. He’s been on our team throughout the first few days of camp, and he’s got a ton of skill. The future looks bright for the Sharks.”
