Soaking Scots set for ’27C’ June scorcher as thunderstorms bring May to an end

NEVER mind Soggy May – Flaming June is on the way with three continental heatwaves and 27C due in Scotland.

After Dank Holiday soakings this week and more rain ahead, skies clear from Friday with 20C sunshine in Scotland as June begins on Saturday, and 21C heat into next week.

And much hotter temperatures are due further into next month, as heat wafts north from the continent, boosted by warm seas.

But there will also be downpours.

The Met Office said hotter-than-usual temperatures in June are more likely than normal.

Highs of 27C in Scotland and a series of heat pulses next month were forecast by The Weather Outlook, although with rain at times.

And the sizzles are expected to cheer Scots after Bank Holiday thunderstorms.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “June looks settled to start with and is forecast several fine spells, with bursts of very warm weather and potentially reaching 27C in Scotland for the first time this year.

It will be a dry weekend with spells of warm sunshine, and this fair weather is likely to continue for a few days into the following week.

“High levels of background warmth and warm sea surface temperatures provide added fuel for hot spells, but also rain at times.”

A Met Office forecaster said: “It stays unsettled now, but by the weekend, the weather will become more settled as high pressure builds.

More thunderstorms to hit UK with urgent warning of ‘life-threatening’ floods

It comes after we revealed that a yellow warning for thunderstorms comes into force in Scotland at 10am tomorrow and is in place until 7pm.

It covers cities including Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee, with forecasters warning of up to 20mm of rain in less than an hour.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: “The thundery risk spreads further north on Wednesday, with a warning in force for much of Scotland.

UK five day weather forecast

Today and tonight – Scattered heavy showers are possible through this evening. Overnight it will remain mostly cloudy, with the risk of further showers, some turning heavy at times.

Wednesday – Wednesday should be a brighter day, though there will be a mix of sunshine and showers. Some of the showers will be heavy with the risk of hail and thunder.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday – Sunshine and showers for Thursday, once again some heavy with hail and thundery. Slowly becoming drier through Friday and into Saturday, with increasing amounts of sunshine. Temperatures near average.

“Further south will see a continued mix of sunshine and showers for many.

“That showery theme, with the potential for some heavier bursts, continues for much of the country on Thursday, though there is also likely to be some sunny spells at times, which could feel quite pleasant away from the rain.

“There is a change signalled for the weekend, with a ridge of high pressure likely to reduce rainfall totals and bring some warm, dry weather for many, though details will become clearer in the coming days.”
