Stacey Solomon reveals her parents took her to an abortion clinic
Stacey Solomon has explained that her parents took her to an abortion clinic when she fell pregnant as a teenager. The star said her mum and dad wanted to make sure she knew about all of the possible options for what to do.
The Loose Women star was 18 when she had her son, Zachary, as a result of what Solomon told Caroline Hiron’s Glad We Had This Chat podcast was her first sexual relationship. She explained that her parents were immediately keen for her to consider every course of action.
She said: “They gave me all the options. And you know what? My dad and mum took me to an abortion clinic to find out what my options were and what I could do.”
Solomon then explained that her parents helped to lay out all of the options, but refused to give any input on her decision. They said that was a decision she had to make on her own.
“I think whatever decision I’d have made, I’d have blamed them for it,” she said. “So they knew what they were doing and they said: ‘This is up to you, we’ll support you whatever choice you make’.
“I remember going in there. You have to have a scan so they can see how far along you are. They didn’t show me the scan, they have the screen facing away from you. But I could hear the heartbeat.”
Solomon eventually chose to have her baby and has since had four more children, including three with her husband — former EastEnders actor Joe Swash.
But Solomon admitted that, when she was a teenager, she was “really scared” to tell her father about what had happened. She has since sought to take the same approach to parenting that he did.
“I think deep down I knew he’d be fine. That is something I always say to my kids, like, come to me. Whatever it is, I am the only one who’s not going to disown you. And I think deep down, I knew that,” she said.
As for her future, Solomon didn’t rule out having more children and explained that her youngest child — Belle, born in February 2023 — came as a pleasant surprise for her and Swash.
Solomon has become increasingly busy as a TV presenter in recent years, cutting down on Loose Women appearances in order to front her own shows — Sort Your Life Out and Stacey Solomon’s Renovation Rescue.
But she explained that she only wants to focus on “passion projects” and might soon stop working altogether in order to spend more time with her large family.
Solomon said: “Every year I have a meeting with my agent and this year when they asked me my five-year goals. I was like, I want to be a stay at home mum. That is like my dream, my ultimate dream. I just want to be with my kids.”
