The 4 results that would eliminate Scotland from Euro 2024 even with Hungary win
History could be made in Stuttgart if Scotland pick up the three points they need against Hungary.
Or yet again, glorious failure could be the all too familiar outcome, even if Steve Clarke’s men defeat the Magyars, which would be typical Scottish sporting heartache. Four points should be enough to make it out of Group A as one of the best four third placed teams. The point against Switzerland kept the hopes alive, but it’s not all about the teams in our group. What happens elsewhere is key and the fact is that it could well be out of Clarke and the boys’ hands.
But what exactly has to happen for victory to be rendered meaningless? It’s an unlikely scenario – in fact, it’s about 6000/1 for the combined set of freak results – and would be a hell of an unlucky outcome, but it’s worth examining. Record Sport takes a look at who we should be rooting for in the coming group stage finales, providing we get the job done ourselves before sitting back and waiting somewhat nervously to discover our Euro 2024 fate.
Group B
Albania beat Spain
Group C
Slovenia beat England
Group D
Netherlands draw or lose against Austria
Group E
Slovakia draw with Romania OR Belgium draw with Ukraine
Group F
Georgia beat Portugal
Now, it’s it the end of the world if one or two of these results happen. But four of the five would see us cruelly sent homewards to think again.
However, the likelihood is that a win WILL see us through and fore the first time ever, qwe can look forward to a knockout game at a major tournament.
When that is and who against won;t be immediately clear. That may take up to NINE days. But as things stand, we’d be facing either Spain or Portugal, or the Group E winners on either June 30 or July 1/2.
