The big Celtic and Rangers questions answered in Cup final Monday Jury special
Did Celtic deserve to lift the cup?
KEITH JACKSON: Yes. They were second best all over the pitch and looked like they had run out of gas long before the end. But this is a side which knows how to win and their rivals simply don’t have the same mental strength.
CRAIG SWAN: Yes. They delivered the big moment. Celtic did not play well in the second half and it was there for Rangers, but they couldn’t do it.
ANDREW NEWPORT: Rangers were the better team for once this season but finals are about the winning. They’d much preferred to have been outplayed but walked off with the silver. If you don’t take advantage when you’re on top, you can’t complain about losing to a sucker punch.
GAVIN BERRY: They were second best but that doesn’t matter – winning is all that matters. So yes they deserved to win it. They took their one big chance and Rangers, for all their possession, didn’t trouble Joe Hart enough apart from the disallowed goal.
Should Brendan Rodgers attempt to talk Joe Hart out of hanging up his gloves?
KEITH: It’s certainly worth a shot. Hart wants to bow out before he’s past his sell by date but he won’t be easy to replace. If Rodgers can’t find an upgrade in the transfer market then it’s a conversation the manager might want to have.
CRAIG: No. The keeper has made his decision and has the right to stand by it. It’s time. Celtic need a new No.1.
ANDREW: He’s been a fine servant during his three years in Glasgow but there have been moments – especially in the Champions League – where his age has showed. It’s time for Celtic to bring in fresh blood.
GAVIN: It’s worth a try but it looks like that ship has sailed he would be wasting his time. Listening to the Englishman’s interviews it’s clear that he’s made up his mind and isn’t for budging. It’s not a decision he’s made on a whim and has already accepted a Euro 2024 punditry role, showing he’s already moved onto the next step. Unless Brendan Rodgers allowed him to skip pre-season!
Can Rangers afford to have Cyriel Dessers leading the line next season?
KEITH: No. Dessers tries his best but consistently comes up short. Rangers won’t win the title next season if he’s Philippe Clement’s first pick No.9.
CRAIG: Dessers can’t be the main man, but it’s unfair to disregard a guy with 22 goals in his first season. He has a role to play.
ANDREW: Nope. He’s finished the campaign with 22 goals but could have bagged double that amount. Rangers need someone far more reliable if they’re to chase down Celtic next season.
GAVIN: His goals this season show he has something to offer – 22 strikes is a more than decent return.
But – and it’s a fairly big but – he lacks the quality and clinical edge when it really matters. He’s not ruthless enough which has been proven with some of his misses. His squandered chances are talked about more than his 22 goals. Handy to have in the squad, but an upgrade starter is needed.
Should Celtic push the boat out to keep Adam Idah?
KEITH: Yes. Idah has done enough to earn himself a future at Celtic. Idah scores big goals at huge moments and offers something completely different to Kyogo Furuhashi. He might cost a few quid but there’s no reason why the club can’t afford to make it happen.
CRAIG: Absolutely. Idah has proven he can do it in big games and he’s young enough to get better. Sign him.
ANDREW: Absolutely. He’s proven he can score for Celtic and crucially, he’s shown he can do it in the big games. He provides a different option to Kyogo which is perfect for when Rodgers needs to change it up.
GAVIN: There can be no doubting the striker’s contribution to this double success – the Hampden winner on Saturday and late goals at Easter Road and Fir Park. But it all comes down to the fee. Brendan Rodgers wants real quality to make a dent in the Champions League and I’m not sure he’s that level so would, say, £6m or £5m be worth it? I’m not so sure.
