The idyllic Highlands fishing village home to ‘the best fish and chips ever’

We are officially halfway through May, and summer is at last on the horizon.

With much of Scotland enjoying warmer temperatures and sunnier skies in recent weeks, it feels like the perfect opportunity to start thinking about staycation destinations. While there is an endless list of scenic spots across the country to spend a day or two, nothing can compare to a trip to the coast.

Even then, there are so many picturesque fishing villages and towns all over Scotland that it can be difficult to decide where to head. If you are stuck for inspiration, the Daily Record has chosen the gorgeous destination of Mallaig as our latest Town of the Week.

Located along the northwest coast of the country, Mallaig is situated at the end of the ‘Road to the Isles’. While it is a common stopping point for those travelling to Skye, the town is well worth a visit all on its own.

The ferry port features a wide array of independent shops that sell everything from home-made trinkets to tasty cakes. There are also some incredible restaurants around town, including one that serves up the “best fish and chips ever” according to one visitor.

Meanwhile, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic walks in the area. Standouts include the idyllic Silver Sands of Morar beaches and the jaw-dropping Loch Morar.

Read on for some photographs that will convince you Mallaig is perfect for a day trip or holiday as we enter the summer months. Meanwhile, check out a few of our previous towns and villages of the week below:

There are a wealth of picturesque walking and hiking trails around Mallaig to venture out on, but if the sun is shining then a trip to the Silver Sands of Morar is an absolute must. Just a few miles out of town, the spectacular series of beaches are home to white sands, aqua blue waters, and far-reaching views out towards the islands of Rum, Eigg, Muck, and Canna.
