The Scottish coastal town near Glasgow home to one of country’s ‘best’ beaches

June has officially begun, which means summer is finally here.

While it may not seem like it with the wet weather we have been having lately, the holiday season is at last kicking off. Some Scots will be jetting off for a fancy trip abroad, but there is plenty of stunning destinations closer to home as well.

For the Daily Record’s first Town of the Week of the summer season, we have chosen the picturesque coastal spot of Troon. If you are looking for a sunny staycation destination, or even just somewhere to head for a day out, this South Ayrshire seaport is the perfect choice.

Situated around just 40 minutes out of Glasgow by car or train, Troon has long been popular amongst those in the city for its spectacular beach. In fact, just last week, Troon Beach was crowned one of the very best in the country at the 2024 Scotland’s Beach Awards.

Featuring long stretches of soft sands and spectacular views out across to the Isle of Arran, the beach is the ideal spot to relax and soak up some sun. There is even a bustling esplanade, where you can pick up everything from fish and chips to ice cream.

Its beach is far from all that Troon has to offer, however. From renowned specialist whisky retailer The Jar to its woodland ‘fairy trail’, there is something for everyone.

When first arriving in Troon, your eye will immediately be drawn to its glorious sandy beach. It is definitely worth walking along the esplanade and just taking in the lovely views out over the Firth of Clyde.

Once you’re settled, it’s time for a proper walk down to the shore. If you are lucky enough to head to Troon on a day when the sun is shining, then there is plenty of space to sit with friends and family for a picnic. It is important to note, however, that dogs are not allowed on Troon Beach between May and September.

Elsewhere, one of Troon’s most charming and unique attractions is the Fullarton Fairy Trail, which consists of a self-led walk through the tranquil Fullarton Woods. Along the way, you will spot fairy doors, carvings, and a play park. Definitely one to take the kids on.

Meanwhile, if you are a golf fan, then a trip to Troon would not be complete without checking out the renowned Royal Troon Golf Club. Regularly hosting the famous Open Championship, the course is easily among the most popular in Scotland — and for good reason.

Finally, for the whisky aficionados, a visit to The Jar is an absolute must. This cute little whisky retailer stocks more than 300 different single malt whiskies — including rare and collectable releases. It even offers tastings, which are perfect if the weather outside is a bit dour.
