The unique Scottish ‘welly garden’ by beach near ‘must visit’ seafood restaurant

The Daily Record is back with another edition of our Walk of the Week series, and this time we have chosen something a bit different.

The previous few editions of our weekly series spotlighting Scotland’s top walks and beauty spots have focused on invigorating hikes that take hours to complete. This week, though, we have opted for something a lot more relaxed.

If you are stuck on where to head for a low-key day out in the sun, the Wellie Garden of St Monans might be just what you are after. Situated on the slipway of the seaside Fife village’s harbour, this one-of-a-kind garden is exactly what it sounds like.

Started by a local teacher and gardener, the plants at the Wellie Garden of St Monans have not been placed in the earth or in a pot. Instead, they have been planted in donated wellie boots from locals and tourists alike.

Once you have admired the flowers and taken a few snaps, you can continue your walk along St Monans’ harbour. From the colourful boats bobbing up and down on the water to the far-reaching views out across the water, it makes for the perfect summer day out.

Meanwhile, among the highlights of the area is the East Pier Smokehouse. This popular seafood restaurant, which serves up everything from lobster to fish and chips has earned rave reviews from customers.

Keep reading for a few photos of the Welly Garden at St Monans, as well as the East Pier Smokehouse, that will surely convince you it is worth a visit. Meanwhile, check out a few of the Daily Record’s past Walks of the Week below:

The Wellie Garden of St Monans was started by local teacher and garden enthusiast Win Brown, who wanted to make use of her grandkids’ old wellie boots. Since then, it has grown and grown — to the point that you will be able to spot more than 200 pairs of boots filled with colourful flowers over the summer.

If you are feeling generous, you can leave a donation behind at the garden that will go to charity. If you really want to leave your mark on the garden, though, why not leave behind a pair of your old wellies?
