Update: Sandin Pellikka Clarifies, He Will Not Come to Red Wings Training Camp
After reports that the Detroit Red Wings high-flying defense prospect Axel Sandin Pellikka would leave Sweden to come to training camp, he will remain in Sweden after all.
Norran, the outlet that previously reported that Sandin Pellikka was headed to the United States this September, clarified that Sandin Pellikka will stay with SHL club Skelleftea.
It would have been surprising for Sandin Pellikka to come to training camp given that the current plan for his 2024-25 season is to stay in the SHL for another season. He won the Salming Award as the Swedish leagues’ best homegrown defenseman en route to Skelleftea’s SHL Championship run. But, Detroit wants him to marinate a little bit longer, typical of its long approach to the maturation of prospects. And because there really isn’t a plan for Sandin Pellikka to play in North America, training camp would have interrupted his SHL season for what amounts to high level practices and a scrimmage.
For other players, the situation is a little different. Independent of Sandin Pellikka, his staying in Sweden does not change the status of Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, who is still expected to come to training camp. As a more pro-ready forward given his forechecking style and useful size, an impressive camp could accelerate his path to North America.
But for Sandin Pellikka, a trip to training camp won’t happen just yet.
