USA vs. Germany Olympic women’s basketball: Live updates, score as Team USA finishes up pool play

Coming off a game that was perhaps closer than Team USA would have liked, the women’s national basketball team now turns its attention to Germany for the closing game in Pool C group play. Before pulling away from Belgium in an 87-74 win, the U.S. held just a seven-point lead at the 5:45 mark of the fourth quarter. Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson combined for 13 points in the closing minutes to help lift Team USA to a 57th straight Olympic Games victory.

Two-time WNBA All-Star Satou Sabally leads Team Germany, which, also at 2-0, has already qualified for the quarterfinals. Sabally is averaging 25.0 points per game in the tournament so far and scored 33 in Germany’s win over Canada on Thursday.

  • After a slow start, the U.S. has built a solid lead against Germany with a pretty even distribution of points. Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson, who’ve lead the U.S. in scoring for every game so far, currently lead with 11 points and eight points, respectively.

    Shooting issues aside, Team USA has done a good job taking advantage of Germany’s turnovers — the Germans have 15 turnovers, and the U.S. has scored 14 points off of them.

  • Team USA 41, Germany 29 at haltime

    Despite the early struggles, the U.S. is now up to a double-digit lead, leading Germany 41-29 heading into the half. But both teams are struggling to score, missing several key shots. Germany only scored 10 points in the second quarter; the U.S. scored 25, but is now 2-for-10 on threes.

  • Jackie Young gives the U.S. momentum with back-to-back points, hitting a long two and then stealing for a fast break layup from Breanna Stewart. Germany takes a timeout as Team USA goes up 32-24.

  • Alyssa Thomas scores a tricky layup to give the United States its first lead of the game. Team USA is now up 24-22 with a little over six minutes left in the half.

  • A huge Kahleah Copper three ties the game again at 22-all, and forces Germany to take a timeout.

  • Jackie Young makes the United States’ first three-pointer and ties the game at 19-all, but a few misses gives Germany’s Emily Bessoir a chance for the and-one to retake the lead.

  • The U.S. has started pushing back, tightening Germany’s lead to 19-16 as the first quarter ends. Both teams went scoreless for the final two minutes of the quarter, with the only points being a pair of free throws from Sabrina Ionescu.

    Team USA is struggling to score three-pointers, going 0-for-3 from beyond the arc in something that has become an unfortunate trend. Germany, meanwhile, was up by as many as nine points but will now have to fend off a surging United States in the final three frames.

  • Germany has built up an early lead, going up 15-6 with just over five minutes left in the quarter. A steal and fast break from Leonie Fiebich forces Team USA to take a timeout.

  • And we’re off! Germany strikes first with a three-pointer from Leonie Fiebich, but Breanna Stewart gets the U.S.’s first points with a jumper in the paint. It’s 5-2 Germany to start after the first few minutes.
