What happened to ‘Scottish Messi’ wonderkid as Scotland confirm Euro 2024 squad

Ryan Gauld, who was compared to the great Lionel Messi in his youth, has impressed in both Portugal and Canada but has missed out on a call-up for Euro 2024

Ryan Gauld was once hailed as the ‘Scottish Messi’ – but he has again been snubbed by his country ahead of Euro 2024.

The Aberdeen-born midfielder made waves at Dundee United, debuting at just 17 and quickly catching the eye of top clubs like Manchester United under David Moyes. His talent even sparked interest from giants such as Liverpool, Everton, Real Madrid, and Roma, drawing comparisons to Lionel Messi due to his diminutive stature and ability on the ball.

Now 28, Gauld’s career trajectory hasn’t quite hit the heights expected, with the player now plying his trade in Canada. This summer, he’ll miss out on the chance to shine on the European stage, as he was not selected for Steve Clarke’s squad heading to Germany.

Gauld moved from Dundee United to Sporting Lisbon in 2014, where he was relieved to drop the ‘Scottish Messi’ and ‘Mini Messi’ labels. Reflecting on those tags, he commented: “I’ve managed to escape from the ‘Mini Messi’ tag and I’m quite glad of it.”

He explained the origin of the comparison: “It was a little bit strange and it came about just because I’m small and left-footed. That’s the comparison and again it was made only after about four or five games for United,” via the Daily Record.

Gauld, after a five-year stint with Sporting Lisbon which included various loan spells in Portugal and a season back in Scotland with Hibs, finally settled at Farense in 2019 after being let go by the Lisbon giants.

At Farense, he helped the team clinch promotion and made his mark in Portugal’s top league. In a significant career move in 2021, Gauld signed with MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, entering a league where he now competes against the actual Messi, now of Inter Miami.
