Which supermarket tops the league for Scottish farm goods?
The budget chain Aldi is the strongest supporter of Scottish farm goods, according to a survey.
NFU Scotland’s second ShelfWatch scheme found that 45 per cent of produce sold in Aldi’s Scottish supermarkets originated in Scotland. Sainsbury’s remains the weakest supporter of Scottish own-label produce.
Researchers looked primarily at own-brand beef, lamb, pork, chicken, eggs, vegetables, soft fruit and dairy products on offer in Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Marks and Spencer, Lidl and Aldi stores.
During 48 hours in late May, an independent research firm visited 73 stores across mainland Scotland and audited more than 15,000 individual products.
