Why Maple Leafs’ Max Domi Was Fined By NHL Player Safety For Elbowing Flyers’ Forward Garnet Hathaway

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi was fined $5,000 by NHL Player Safety on Monday after elbowing Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway.

The elbow from Domi came in the third period of Sunday’s 3-2 overtime win against the Flyers. The 29-year-old forward was assessed an elbowing penalty on Hathaway 5:13 into the final frame.

Domi’s elbow comes just over 25 minutes after Hathaway dropped the gloves with Jake McCabe. Toronto’s defenseman fought the Flyers’ forward after he collided with Dennis Hildeby while going to the net.

Hathaway and McCabe wrestled each other to the ground, but the Maple Leafs’ defenseman was shaken up after hitting the ice awkwardly. He was able to exit the ice on his own, though he never returned to the game with what Toronto called an upper-body injury.

Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube didn’t have an update on McCabe following Toronto’s overtime win over Philadelphia other than saying they’d see how he’s feeling on Monday.

“I can’t give you any really news on him,” the head coach said before adding his reaction when McCabe went to the ice.

“I didn’t like what I saw, I’ll tell you that. He’s sticking up for his team and his teammate. We all really appreciate that. But I do not like seeing that happen.”

This isn’t the first time NHL Player Safety has fined Domi. In November 2021, while with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the forward was fined $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The NHL also fined him in May 2023 after he slashed Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final.

After signing a four-year, $15 million extension with Toronto in late June, Domi has three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 33 games this season. The money from Domi’s fine will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
