Yankees’ decision to sit Giancarlo Stanton for consecutive games is matchup related

Giancarlo Stanton isn’t an everyday player anymore but when he’s not in the Yankees starting lineup for consecutive games, there are bound to be questions and they were answered by New York’s designated hitter.

Just moments after Wednesday’s startling lineup was posted, Stanton spoke to the media in the clubhouse. First, he confirmed that he’s healthy and that manager Aaron Boone told him that he would be sitting two of the team’s three games in Seattle for matchup reasons, which the skipper confirmed later in his pregame talk.

With Stanton out of the lineup on Wednesday, you can pencil him in for Thursday’s series finale.

Stanton is 0-for-3 with a strikeout against Wednesday’s starter, Bryce Miller, in his career. He’s 2-for-6 with a double and a strikeout in his career against Thursday’s starter, Logan Gilbert.

After the rosters expanded and the eventual call-up of Jasson Dominguez, it leaves Boone a daily conundrum on who to play. The team wants Dominguez to play just about every day, and Aaron Judge and Juan Soto will be in every lineup as long as they are healthy.

That usually leaves Alex Verdugo and Stanton as the odd men out on any given day.

When asked if he’s frustrated about his playing time, Stanton shut the question down.

“We’re not gonna make this a story of how I feel,” Stanton said via the Daily News’ Gary Phillips. “We’re gonna be fine either way.”

Stanton last played on Sunday against the Red Sox where he went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk. This season, Stanton is slashing .233/.296/.474 with 25 home runs and 64 RBI in 105 games.

The Yankees finish their three-game set with the Mariners on Thursday afternoon and Stanton is expected to be in the starting lineup.
