Yankees’ Gerrit Cole scratched from Tuesday’s start against Phillies due to general body fatigue
The Yankees won’t have their ace on the mound on Tuesday night.
Gerrit Cole has been scratched from his scheduled start due to general body fatigue.
Will Warren will start in his place.
Cole started the season on the IL due to inflammation in his right elbow. The reigning CY Young winner made his season debut on June 19, but he hasn’t looked like himself through his first seven starts.
Cole told Greg Joyce of the New York Post that he just hasn’t recovered well from his last start, saying that the fatigue is not specific to his elbow. Cole also said there’s a chance he pitches this weekend with few extra days of rest.
Overall, Cole has a 5.40 ERA and 5.53 FIP, and his fastball velocity, which is typically in the 98-99MPH range, has averaged out at 95.9MPH. In his most recent start against the Mets, Cole allowed six earned runs, including three home runs, in 5.2 innings against the Mets.
The Yankees have reportedly been very active in looking for starting pitching depth, and it’s fair to imagine those efforts could ramp up even more if Cole were to miss any more time.
